Nurse Managed Model
The nurse managed model of care emphasizes health promotion and disease and disability prevention from a physical, cultural, emotional and spiritual perspective.  The nurse-managed care strategy was embraced in order to provide a health services delivery system in which mature women could have direct access to nursing care.

Menopause Clinic
The primary focus within the Menopause Clinic is on the patient and her individualized needs. The nurse reviews a detailed medical and personal history and completes an individualized risk assessment on each patient. Along with the patient, the nurse will priorize issues and concerns and complete a care plan with the patient. Other team members may be involved in the patient care.

Several physicians are available within the Menopause Clinic setting.  The physician will focus on medical interventions and treatment options with the patient.  A pharmacist is available to provide education regarding new and existing medications. Each patient has an opportunity to meet with the clinical dietitian, to discuss dietary interventions, complementary therapies, and personal objectives.  An exercise therapist is also available to assist in the management of lifestyle issues.

Genital Health Clinic
As women age, they may experience genital and vaginal changes that impact on their quality of life and intimate relationships.  Depending on how long it has been since a woman has reached menopause, (natural or treatment induced) will sometimes determine the severity of the symptoms.  Some women may feel uncomfortable talking to their family doctor about genital irritation or pain with intercourse.  All women referred to this specialized clinic will receive individualized health counseling and support.

Sexual Health Clinic
The Sexual Health Clinic is designed to address the sexual health concerns of women who are approaching or already in menopause. This multi-disciplinary clinic focuses on a variety of sexual health concerns that a woman and/or her partner may experience including: changes in sexual drive, loss of sensation during sexual activity, painful intercourse, vaginal dryness, and couple or relationship sexual problems. Occasionally practitioners from outside the Mature Women’s Centre such as physiotherapists or psychologists may also be consulted.

Lifestyle Program
Making lifestyle changes such as improving your diet and adding some activity to your life should be the first steps to a

healthierfuture. The Mature Women's Centre has a Registered Dietitian and Exercise Therapist that work with the medical team to ensure our patients are receiving as much  guidance as they need to make these necessary lifestyle changes.

TLC "Time for Lifestyle Change" program

  • Are you so busy taking care of everyone and everything else that there is no time left for yourself?
  • Do you keep resolving over and over again to eat healthier, get more exercise and reduce your stress without following through?
  • As you get older, do you have more questions than answers to your health issues?

We conduct an innovative, hands on approach to improving healthy lifestyle habits. Small groups meet on a regular basis to discuss mature women's health concerns (heart disease, osteoporosis, menopause and diabetes). The dietitian, kinesiologist, nurse and pharmacist guide the group through practical activities that will address issues such as:

  • Tuning your eating habits for weight management and cholesterol reduction
  • Safe, fun and effective exercise
  • Understanding "metabolic syndrome"
  • Managing stress
  • Smoking cessation strategies
  • Understanding risks and benefits of medications, including vitamins and herbal supplements.

This program currently runs twice a year: September to November and April to June. To qualify for this program, you must have a physician's referral and have at least three of the following criteria:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Overweight (waist measure over 35 inches)
  • Sedentary
  • Diabetic
  • Smoker
