The first phase of construction on the Vic's new Emergency Centre is nearing completion, with staff preparing to move in this fall. The flooring and wall painting are about 90 per cent complete. The first phase of construction will see the Emergency department split into two main areas: 12,000 square feet of the new space and a portion of the existing space.

The project is expected to be complete by next fall.

The promise of hot food, hot fashion, and hot prizes drew over 400 winter-weary guests to the Foundation's annual dinner last night at the Fairmont Winnipeg. Highlights of the evening included a fashion show, live musical entertainment, henna artists, an interactive surgical display, live and silent auctions, and an original fusion menu.

Thanks to all supporters, sponsors, volunteers, and participants who helped make the evening a success! $50,000 was raised to support the Vic's minimally invasive surgery project. This project will see two of the Vic's existing operating rooms completely renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art surgical equipment and technology.

About 150 members of our community attended a multi-faith blessing ceremony and open house today to celebrate the opening of the Vic's new Buhler Cancer Centre. Blessings were offered by various faith leaders in recognition of the medical and emotional journey faced by cancer patients. Volunteers were onhand to provide guided tours of the state-of-the-art facility.

Thanks to all who came out! You have offered hope and support to all cancer patients who will walk through the doors of the Buhler Cancer Centre.

The Vic's new Buhler Cancer Centre is officially open! Patients are now being seen in a bright and spacious new 13,000 square foot addition at the front of the hospital, as opposed to the cramped quarters in the hospital's basement where they were previously receiving care. The new Centre contains more chemotherapy treatment spaces and exam rooms, and allows for improved patient flow, more privacy, and less congestion and noise. The Centre offers views of a healing garden through windows that wrap around the unit.

Special thanks to everyone who helped make this Centre a reality! Your vision is changing lives and saving lives here at the Vic. The new Buhler Cancer Centre is proof that we can all help make miracles happen in our community!

The Vic's new Foundation offices are now complete! We have now moved back inside the hospital after spending the last seven years in a trailer behind the hospital. We look forward to reconnecting with hospital staff, who have already made us feel welcome in our new home. We are thrilled to be back inside the Vic and look forward to sharing this environment with hospital staff and supporters who care so deeply about the people in this community.

Last night, over 200 colleagues, patients, and families paid tribute to Dr. Ian Maxwell, the Vic's Medical Director of Oncology, honouring him for the care and compassion he has shown to cancer patients for more than 30 years, and for his leadership and vision in developing the Vic's oncology program.

In recognition of his legacy, the clinical area of the Vic's new Cancer Centre will be named in Dr. Maxwell's honour. In addition, the Foundation has established the Dr. Ian Maxwell Endowment Fund, which will support oncology patient care and staff development at the Vic for many years to come. The response to both the event and the new Fund has been overwhelming, a testament to the respect, admiration and love that so many have for Dr. Maxwell. What a wonderful evening!

Traditionally, each year the Foundation has hosted an annual dinner to raise funds for the hospital. This year, we threw caution to the wind and hosted an event with a much different flavour! Tonight, over 1,000 people packed the Pantages Playhouse Theatre to see the première performance of Jewels, an evening of classical Indian ballet that raised $100,000 for the vic's minimally invasive surgery program. In addition to being a fabulous fundraiser, Jewels was also an amazing cultural experience. Manohar Performing Arts of Canada presented a visually dazzling performance featuring original music and choreogrphy, vibrant sets, and exquisite costumes. The sponsors, supporters, performers and volunteers who put their hearts and souls into this event are true gems!

Tonight, we treated nearly 100 guests to a special Dinner in the OR. Guests were invited to "gown up” and tour an existing OR and were then treated to a delicious dinner. Throughout the evening, surgeons and staff outlined plans to convert two of the Vic’s ORs to minimally invasive standards and explained what this will mean for patients. Guests then had the chance to test their laparoscopic surgery skills in a modern minimally invasive OR.

This event was so much fun and we really enjoyed the chance to connect with people who care about health care in their community. The Vic's OR surgeons and staff show such passion for their patients, their work, and this hospital.  Their enthusiasm is both inspiring and contagious. This event will go a long way toward toward advancing surgical care for patients at the Vic through the minimally invasive surgery project.

Today, was another great day for the Medicine & Miracles Campaign and patients at the Vic. First, we hosted a news conference outside the hospital to announce a $100,000 gift to the Vic's Medicine & Miracles Campaign from the South Beach Casino Community Spirit Fund in support of the new Cancer Centre. The donation is believed to be the first major gift by an aboriginal-owned company to a Manitoba health facility.

In the afternoon, we hosted our annual Donor Reception at the Caboto Centre. Over 200 donors, including representatives of the South Beach Casino, came out despite the dismal fall weather. This is such a fun event! It is so nice to meet all of these Miracle Makers and say thank you for their generosity and loyalty to the Vic.

Special thanks to Ruth Lindquist and Bruce Lillie (right) of Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence for sponsoring the Donor Reception!

Last night over 200 community leaders attended the second annual 2011 Society reception with Hospital President Ray Racette.  The 2011 Society is working to raise $1 million for priority projects at the Vic by the year 2011, when the Hospital will celebrate its 100th birthday.  The first project is the new Emergency Centre.

We are so excited and inspired by the generosity of our 2011 Society members!  In just two short years, the Society has raised over $200,000 for the Emergency Centre.  What a great way to give back to our community!

It’s official!  Construction is underway!  The fences are up and the workers are busy getting the site prepared for the more exciting work yet to come.

They’ve had to make some changes at the entrance and to parking.  This might be a bit inconvenient for some, but when you think about the big picture and what the project means for patients and the care they will receive at the Vic, it’s all worth it!

What a beautiful day!  Over 100 people – donors, government representatives, hospital staff, volunteers, and board members – came out today to celebrate the official sod-turning for the Vic’s new Cancer Centre.  So many people have worked so hard on the plans for this project!  It is so wonderful to see this dream becoming a reality.  Unfortunately, we will probably all be touched by cancer – directly or indirectly – at some point in our lives.  It is no wonder then that donor support for this project has been outstanding.

Today, Health Minister Theresa Oswald announced the Provincial Government’s commitment of over $13 million to the Vic’s redevelopment project. The construction of the Cancer Centre will soon be underway, so we were thrilled to have the Minister here for this announcement.

Healthy Living Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross was also here to officially open the new Mature Women’s Centre, so it was a very exciting day here at the Vic. The Mature Women’s Centre will now be able to expand its programs and services, which address the unique health and wellness needs of mature women.  It is a great addition to the Vic!
