Manitoba’s Junior Bisons Women’s Volleyball Team
In March 2008, eighteen teams from across Canada competed in the Best of the West Volleyball Championship in Calgary, Alberta. Organized by the Calgary Dinos Women’s Volleyball Club, the event aims to give Canada’s best female volleyball teams the opportunity to compete at the highest level of their sport while also raising awareness and funds for women’s health and wellness issues in their respective communities.
Thanks to the generosity of corporate and community sponsors, each team that participated in the tournament went home with a minimum of $700 to give to a charity of their choice.
Among this year’s participants was a team of 10 women from Manitoba. The ‘Junior Bisons’ chose to donate their winnings to the Victoria General Hospital’s minimally invasive surgery project.
The project, which will see two of the Vic’s 35-year-old operating rooms renovated and outfitted with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, will also help to build upon the hospital’s commitment to encouraging surgical innovation and advancement. Many of the surgeries performed at the Vic are gynecological in nature, so this project will have significant impact on patient care for women at the Vic.
Special thanks to Courtney Giesbrecht, Carlee Leclerc, Michelle Leclerc, Jenny McDonald, Jewel Pierre-Roscelli, Lena Pitsanuk, Dayna Roemermann, Sandra Rutowicz, Lauren Shinkel, and Melissa Unrau for their energy, enthusiasm, and generosity.
