The Helene Hudson Family
According to those who knew her best – her children – Helene Hudson was truly an angel, a unique woman who had a huge heart and was the epitome of selflessness. Though she passed away more than a decade ago, she touched the lives of thousands of people and her miracles live on today in the hearts and minds of men and women in our community who remember her caring words, her laughter and her dedication to cancer patients and their families.
Helene’s children - Lauren, Steve and Randy - are the miracle makers now. In honour of their mom they are raising funds for a Nourishment Room in the Vic’s new Cancer Centre.
Lauren, Steve and Randy say that to this day, when people realize they are Helene’s children, they relate heartwarming stories about how Helene cared for them or a family member.
“The one thing they have in common are their thoughts and feelings towards my mother and the Vic Oncology Department,” says Randy. “No matter how terrible their family’s ordeal, their lives were made better because of the compassionate care they received.”
Among her many accomplishments, Helene was a founding member of CanSurmount, a support group for cancer patients and their families that today is part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s support network.
“My mom was one of the first people who believed in caring for the whole person - as well as the family members of the cancer patients,” says Lauren. “She was ahead of her time.”
Helene’s story is remarkable and teaches us all that with vision, compassion and determination, miracles can happen.
