Friends of Darlene Williams
On December 28, 2006, at the young age of 41, Darlene Williams’ life ended far too early.
Described by friends as “a force of nature”, Darlene was a positive influence on everyone she encountered and showed a real zest for life.
When Darlene learned she had cancer, she faced this journey with the same courage and determination as every other challenge in her life. Throughout her illness, Darlene maintained her deep love for her family. She was a committed friend and a truly caring and concerned individual.
When she realized she was losing her battle with cancer, Darlene expressed hope that her life would be remembered as one that had made a difference. The care she had received from the entire medical team at the Victoria General Hospital was exemplary and she wanted to make a difference for other patients at the Vic.
To honour her memory and in appreciation of the care she received, Darlene’s friends and family have set up a memorial fund to create a comfort room – a relaxed space for critically ill patients and their families to gather for special meals, movie nights and relaxed visits in a home-like setting – a home away from home.
Initially, the Friends of Darlene Williams set out to raise $25,000 for Darlene’s memorial fund. However, the response from individuals and community organizations has been so overwhelmingly positive that they have raised their goal to $100,000 and are working with hospital staff to make her dream a reality.
Darlene made a difference in the lives of each and every person who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on in their hearts and in the hearts of patients and families at the Vic who benefit from her legacy.
