Dr. Chandu Shah
Dr. Chandu Shah’s relationship with the Victoria General Hospital began several decades ago when the hospital was still located on River Avenue.
As the Vic’s Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Shah helped to lead the advancement of minimally invasive techniques at the Vic in the early 1960s when he began applying them to minor gynaecological procedures. In 1991, Dr. Shah and a colleague at the Vic performed the first laparoscopically assisted hysterectomy in Manitoba, securing the Vic’s position as a leader in this area.
Over the years, through the use of advanced microsurgery techniques, Dr. Shah has helped countless couples suffering from infertility problems to experience the joys of parenthood. These children became known as Dr. Shah’s miracle babies.
In December 1997, patients and staff organized a special birthday party for Dr. Shah, a loving and fitting tribute to a man who has helped so many experience the miracle of life. Over 300 people were there that day to celebrate with Dr. Shah, including 150 of his miracle babies – some of whom were now teenagers.
Today, Dr. Shah remains a tireless community volunteer, lending his passion and expertise to several boards and committees, including the Victoria General Hospital Foundation. He also served as the co-chair for Jewels, a spectacular evening of Indian ballet and music held this past March in support of the Vic’s minimally invasive surgery project.
