THANK YOU!

WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR $1 MILLION GOAL FOR

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY!

Laparoscopic – or minimally invasive – surgery emerged in the late 1980’s. Through the use of miniature video cameras, monitors, and specialized surgical tools, surgeons are able to perform procedures using only a few small incisions.

Today.

Of the over 15,000 surgeries performed at the Vic annually, more than 80% utilize minimally invasive techniques, resulting in numerous benefits for patients, including less pain, fewer complications, dramatically reduced recovery time, and a quicker return to normal activities. With shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and less follow-up care required, minimally invasive surgeries also result in great savings for our health care system.

Despite the dramatic evolution of surgical techniques, the Vic’s operating rooms have remained virtually unchanged since they were designed over 35 years ago.

Tomorrow.

As part of the Vic’s redevelopment project, the hospital will completely refit two surgical suites to accommodate today’s advanced, minimally invasive technology and provide our surgical teams with an environment compatible with the complex surgeries they are performing.

The renovation will include the addition of high definition cameras, flat-panel monitors, and lights attached to mechanical arms mounted on the ceiling. This clears of floor space and creates an unencumbered space for surgeons, nurses and anesthetists.

The resolution of the high-tech cameras is better than the human eye and the monitors offer incredible clarity, allowing surgeons to perform intricate tasks with ease and amazing accuracy. Voice-activated systems featuring hundreds of preprogrammed set-up options tailored to the procedure and each surgeon’s preferences will create significant efficiencies for OR staff.

During procedures, surgeons will be able to use video conferencing for education purposes or to consult with specialists in other parts of Winnipeg or around the world.

With state-of-the-art operating theatres and equipment, the Vic will also be in a position to attract the best and the brightest surgical staff in a highly competitive market.

Together.

Thank you for making miracles happen! We have now achieved our $1 million goal for the Vic's minimally invasive surgery program. Our patients will experience less pain, faster recovery times, and fewer complications - thanks to you.
