Volunteering
At The Vic
The Victoria General Hospital has a strong, vibrant
volunteer community, who help our hospital by sharing
their time, talents and life experiences to enrich the
lives of our patients and visitors.
The Volunteer Services Department is responsible
for recruiting, training and placement of volunteers.
Every effort is made to assign volunteers in positions,
which reflect their interests and needs as well as the
needs of the hospital. There are many questions that
perspective volunteers have before making the decision

At the VIC, Volunteers are active seven days a week
providing a wide range of services throughout the hospital.
There are two main categories that volunteers work in;
Patient Care and Non-Patient Care areas. The list below
indicates opportunities within these categories.
Patient
Care Duties
Surgi-Center
(Day Surgery)
Assisting patients through the admission process
for surgery, as well as upon return from surgery, making
nourishment and assisting with discharge from the hospital.
Shifts are as follows:
- Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Volunteers commit to one shift per week. Volunteers can
also work on a casual/spare basis
Emergency/Observation
Unit
Emergency and Observation
Department Volunteer
Volunteers assist staff with delivering
water jugs and meal trays to patients as well as delivering
specimens to the lab, assisting in making beds and ice
packs. Volunteers commit to one shift per week and shifts
are as follows:
Emergency Ambassador Volunteer
Volunteers assist by greeting patients upon arrival
to the department and ensure patients and families are
attended to in the waiting room. Volunteers must have
excellent communication skills, as they will act as
a liaison between the staff, patients and those accompanying
them. Volunteers commit to one per shift per or alternate
Saturdays or Sundays from 2:00pm - 5:00pm or 5:00pm
to 8:00pm
Medical
Rehabilitation Unit (MRU)
Volunteers work directly with geriatric-rehab patients
to assist the Recreation Coordinator with weekly activities
such as creative crafts, exercise programs, entertainment
events, as well as some outings. Volunteers commit to
approximately one (two-hour) shift per week.
Oncology
Providing assistance and direction for patients
arriving at the Oncology Clinics. This includes preparing
examination rooms, making refreshments, as well as offering
assistance in the reception area. Shifts are from 8:00
a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (approx.) Monday through Thursday.
Volunteers commit to one shift per week.
Physiotherapy
Assisting Physiotherapists in the preparation of
equipment for treatments, supervising exercises, assisting
in knee classes, preparing hot/cold packs and observing
patients' assessments. This position is ideal for students
considering a career in Physical Therapy. Shifts are
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00
p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers commit to one shift per
week.
Diagnostic Services
Volunteers assist with greeting and preparing outpatients
for diagnostic tests; primarily CT Scans. Shifts are
Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 12:00pm. Volunteers
commit to one shift per week.
Victoria Lifeline
Home Service Representative - Working offsite of
the hospital - visiting, demonstrating, and installing
Lifeline equipment in people's homes. Position requires
a vehicle, a desire to travel within city limits and
to be a friendly representative for the Lifeline Department.
Shifts are flexible and can accommodate a variety of
schedules.
Nursing Units
Volunteers assist with a variety of duties on the
Family Birth Centre, Medical Rehab, Surgical and Medical
Units. These duties include delivering fresh ice water
to patients, selling newspapers, transporting patients
to chapel services, delivering flower arrangements,
taking patients outside for fresh air as well as other
miscellaneous duties to assist nursing staff.
The hours are between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00
p.m. and 3:00 p.m daily. Volunteers commit to one shift
per week. Volunteers can also work on a casual/spare
basis. Junior Volunteers perform these duties on Saturdays
and Sundays.
Food
Services
Assisting the Food Services Department in their
menu planning by obtaining information from patients
regarding dietary needs. This position is completed
Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 and
11:00 a.m. Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift
per week.
Lunch and Dinner Companion Program
Assisting nursing staff in distribution and pick
up of meal trays and providing assistance including
feeding and companionship over the meal time.
Lunch Companion shifts are between the hours of 11:30
a.m. and 1:15 p.m. daily. Dinner Companion shifts are
4:30pm to 6:30pm, Monday to Friday only (no weekends).
Volunteers commit to one shift per week during either
mealtime.
Junior Volunteers perform the lunch companion program
on Saturdays and Sundays.
Library
Cart
This program consists of offering books and magazines
via the library cart to patients during their hospital
stay as well as replenishing magazines in hospital lounges
and waiting rooms. Through this program, volunteers
are encouraged to visit and interact with patients.
The Library Cart is offered on a daily basis during
either the morning or afternoon for approximately two
hours. Volunteers commit to one shift a week. Junior
Volunteers perform this duty on Saturdays and Sundays.
Junior Volunteer Program (Formerly known as Candystriping)
Junior Volunteers are teens between the ages of
14 and 16. They work on units such as maternity, surgery,
medicine and geriatric-rehab. Their duties consist of
delivering water jugs and flowers, distributing meal
trays and providing assistance including feeding; selling
newspapers, library cart, and friendly visiting, as
well as other miscellaneous duties from our Print Shop.
Junior Volunteers commit to alternate Saturdays or Sundays
throughout the school year between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30
p.m., as well as on weekdays during the winter, spring
and summer holidays.
Non Patient Care Duties
Food Services
Working under the supervision of a registered dietician
or the Manager of Food Services on projects such as
conducting patient surveys, research and administrative
duties. Shifts vary from two to four hours in length
Monday to Friday during the day. Volunteers commit to
one shift per week. Please note shifts are limited in
this placement and preference is given to students who
are pursuing education in this field.
Victoria Lifeline
Volunteers provide clerical assistance in our Victoria
Lifeline Department, which include filling, collating
promotional items and mail outs as well as some typing.
Shifts vary throughout Monday to Friday for approximately
three to four hours in length. Volunteers commit to
one shift per week.
Gift
Shop
Working as a cashier in the Victoria Hospital Gift
Shop serving customers and operating the cash register
and interac/credit card machine. Volunteers also replenish
stock and ensure the store is neat and tidy. The Gift
Shop shifts are as follows:
Volunteers commit to one shift per week during the
weekdays or alternate days on weekends. Volunteers can
also work on a casual/spare basis.
Front Lobby Ambassadors
Ambassadors are friendly greeters in our hospital
lobby who assist our visitors and patients arriving
to the hospital. Duties include assisting with the parking
meters, providing directions to various departments
for tests or appointments, answering general inquiries
and assisting with patient discharges. Shifts take place
Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30
p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers commit to a minimum of
one shift per week.
Fundraising
Assisting the Guild of Victoria General Hospital
with special projects/events throughout the year such
as raffle ticket sales, craft & bake sales, luncheons
and other fundraising activities. Flexible shifts vary
throughout the year.
