Your Gifts at Work
Your generosity has helped the hospital purchase new and replacement equipment for many years, including the following:

Laparoscopic Surgical Equipment

Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) System

One of the new pieces of equipment that has been generously donated for the minimally invasive surgical suites is the Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) system. TEM allows for polyps and potential cancerous growths to be removed using natural orifices.

The Vic is only the third site in Canada to use this groundbreaking technology, and patients are already booked for this procedure for the next several months. Thanks to this new piece of equipment, not only can major bowel surgeries now be done as day surgery procedures, they can be done without an incision. And best of all, patients experience less risk of complications.

Countless lives have and will continue to benefit from this one gift to our hospital, and from the many generous gifts we receive from people like you every day.

Thank you for making miracles happen!

GreenLight XPS Laser Therapy For Enlarged Prostates

The Victoria General Hospital is the first medical facility in Winnipeg to treat enlarged prostate using a new breakthrough laser treatment called GreenLight™ XPS Laser Therapy. Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), affects more than half of all men over the age of 50. GreenLight XPS Laser Therapy uses laser energy to remove enlarged prostate tissue. The result is in an open channel for urine to flow through, with fewer risks of sexual and other side-effects common with a traditional invasive surgical procedure. Patients recently treated at Victoria General Hospital have experienced rapid symptom relief, a dramatic improvement in urinary flow and reported minimal side effects.

GreenLight Laser Therapy is another huge step forward in Victoria General Hospital’s innovative surgery program. Until now, treatment options for BPH in Winnipeg have been limited to a lifetime of medication or an invasive surgical procedure. Medication is a costly alternative that can stop working over time and has potential side effects. Invasive surgery is associated with higher risks and complications, such as impotence and incontinence, and typically requires a two to three day hospital stay and four to six week recovery.

The purchase of the GreenLight Laser Therapy system would not have been possible without the generosity of all of our supporters.  It is clear that our community is committed to high quality healthcare and it is through their generous gifts that the hospital can continue to stay at the forefront of surgical innovation.

Filmless Imaging

In 2002, the Vic installed and implemented the first fully-integrated filmless imaging system (PACS) in Manitoba. PACS allows for electronic images to be captured, stored, and distributed. There are numerous advantages to the filmless imaging system. The reduction of film is more cost-effective, although dollars are still required to operate the PACS. Physicians no longer need to wait for images to be filmed or lost studies to be found. Interpretation of exams is faster, as is report turn around time. Most importantly, patient care is improved as decisions on patient treatment and management can be made more quickly and efficiently.

Special thanks to The Guild of the Victoria General Hospital for their generous $500,000 gift toward this system!

Multi-Therapy Pressure Relief Mattress

Thanks to a generous donor, the Vic is now home to a Multi-Therapy Pressure Relief Mattress System. While a patient is lying in bed, they are often required to rest in a specific position to avoid further injury and heal faster and this immobility that can lead to complications over time. Lack of movement creates constant pressure on one specific area in the body and eventually can cause the strained tissue to die; forming what is known as a pressure ulcer. Although these sores can sometimes develop in as little as 24 hours, they take much longer to heal and can cause the patient a great deal of pain.

The Multi-Therapy Pressure Relief Mattress System addresses this problem. Pressure-relief mattress systems are designed for pressure redistribution to help prevent and treat pressure ulcers. Simply enter the patient’s weight and height and select the therapy most appropriate for the patient. They also have several features designed to relieve pressure on the patient's skin, particularly in sensitive areas such as the heel. Along with enhanced performance, the mattress is engineered to improve safety and comfort, providing caregivers with the attributes they seek when treating patients.

Within the Multi-Therapy Pressure Relief Mattress System there are air cylinders that gently expand and contract with patient movement, providing continually equalized pressure without the power source required to distribute pressure in high-end treatment surfaces. This hospital bed is designed to help deliver effective wound therapy and improved patient and caregiver safety in acute-care environments.

Special thanks to the Stenson family for their generous and ongoing donations!

Freezer (-80 degrees)

The freezer will soon allow the Vic to participate in valuable clinical trials for oncology patients – including human tissue research. The donation of this -80 degree freezer allows our lab to store human samples. Our research department can continue to strive for the highest quality of research and drive further breakthroughs.
